The Diller-Quaile String Quartet

Classical Access Outreach Program
Photo This program, begun in 1994, brings the Diller-Quaile String Quartet to three New York City public day care and after-school centers in East Harlem, the Bronx and the Lower East Side for a series of three concerts at each, as well as P.S. 84 located on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Designed as an introduction to chamber music for groups of children ages 6-10, who otherwise might not have the opportunity or exposure, these "Residencies" are a series of informal, hands-on presentations. After a short "mini-concert," Quartet members help the children discover their own musical sensibilities by leading and involving them in singing and rhythmic games. Some children are given the opportunity to play a small violin, viola or cello. Following the final visit to each center at the end of the academic year, the program director works with center staff to identify students who seem eager to begin instrumental study. Interested parents are invited to an orientation meeting at Diller-Quaile, followed by individual interviews for each child to assess readiness. Additionally, a Scholarship Fund provides assistance for qualifying families.
